Last modified: 26 Feb 2019

Most parents who have young children often forget to take care of themselves, since they are so busy taking care of their children. Netball star Liz Ellis believes that it is a must for parents to be healthy as well and shares her tips on how to achieve this goal.

Top Tips to Being a Healthy Parent

Get incidental exercise on a regular basis – One of the best ways to stay fit without keeping time aside for exercising is to incorporate activities such as walking, climbing stairs or cycling into your daily schedule. While taking the elevator, escalator or a car is much easier, substituting these activities with light to moderate exercises can help you stay fit.

Avoid eating your Children’s Leftovers – While it may be tempting to snack on the kids leftovers when they waste food; you should remember that if you have already eaten then these leftovers will only add to your weight.

Plan ahead for meals – One of the easiest ways to maintain a healthy weight is to plan ahead and purchase nutritious food items weekly. Fruits, vegetables and other perishables can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days.

Get Adequate Sleep – Getting enough sleep is a must especially if you have young children who tire you out throughout the day. Getting into bed early, staying away from late night television during week days and avoiding blue screens such as TV’s iPhones and iPods at nights, can help you get good sleep. Blue screens often stimulate the brain and make it harder to switch off, which can in turn cause you to lose sleep.

Keep Yourself Hydrated – By drinking adequate amounts of water, you can ensure that your skin, internal organs and cognitive abilities such as the ability to stay alert stay intact for a long time.

Be Good to Yourself – Both stress and anxiety, are detrimental to your mental and physical health. Just by stressing and worrying, housework does not get done any faster. Hence, before you stress out the next time, remember to be kind to yourself so that you can take better care of yourself and your family.
